Direct Injection Boxes (DI Boxes)
A DI Box takes a standard signal level mono output from an instrument and gives a balanced mono microphone output suitable for connecting to mixing desks and other equipment requiring a balanced input.
They are also useful for converting mono outputs from instruments such as guitars, keyboards etc for running over long distances or patching into multicores since balanced mono signals are more robust and much less susceptable to interference or signal loss. A DI Box should also be impedance matching, converting the high impedance mono signal into a low impedence and often work in both directions, impedence matching balanced sources such as microphones for connection to equipment with unbalanced aux level inputs.
Key terms to look out for when buying a DI Box are:-
Passive
Passive DI Boxes are the simplest form of DI box and convert the signal without any additional processing. A passive DI Box will typically not require a power source so is largely immune from problems such as ground loop noise or "mains hum".
Active
Active DI Boxes require a power source and boost the signal level. They are handly for boosting low level signals but can also boost noise and introduce artifacts or ground loop "mains hum" if powered from a mains transformer.
Filtered
Some DI boxes perform simple filtering, reducing noise by filtering some frequencies which are typically associated with equipment noise or hum.
